Florida Tattoo License Training Requirements

To achieve initial licensure or registration as a tattoo artist in Florida, applicants must complete a specialized training course focused on bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases. This training is essential to ensure that artists know how to maintain safe practices and protect themselves and their clients. Upon completing the course, individuals must pass an examination to demonstrate their understanding of the material.

It's important to note that once an artist license is obtained, there are no ongoing continuing education requirements for license renewal or the re-registration of guest artists. This streamlined process allows artists to focus on their craft without the burden of additional training mandates.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the current regulations established by the Florida Legislature (effective January 1, 2012) concerning the operation of tattoo establishments in Florida, which require bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases training for tattoo artists (sections 381.00771-381.00791, Florida Statutes (F.S.)).
  • Identify the medical and health issues associated with tattooing.
  • Recognize contamination and contact transmission of diseases within tattoo establishments.

  • Provide identification of diseases, descriptions of infectious agents, modes of transmission, incubation periods, periods of communicability, and prevention methods for disease transmission in tattoo establishments (as discussed in the general prevention section after the course).
  • Understand the minimum operational sanitary and safety requirements related to the design and operation of tattoo and temporary establishments.
